Notes & Hints from Linda & Rich About Yard Sales!

     Please!  If you are going to go through all the trouble of holding a garage sale, then spend some time letting customers know how to find your sale!  Make several good signs and/or run an ad with a complete address. Don't assume that everyone knows exactly where you live! Rich and I find that most ads in the newspaper do not have complete addresses - most only a street name - but no town!
     So we end up just driving around hoping to find some garage sales. Most of the time we see signs on poles, usually at main intersections. You have to remember that signs at main intersections are great, but a simple arrow and the day of the sale - in large letters - is all that is necessary. When someone is in a moving car, driving through a main intersection with lots of traffic, there is not much time to read a small sign with a lot of words on it. We've seen signs that were made on cheap paper (which had to withstand the morning dew or rain) and they are wilted and unreadable. Make more than one sign! Put other signs along the way to your sale, so potential customers will know they are going the right way. Don't assume that everyone knows exactly where you live! And for those people who live in rural areas - PLEASE - let potential customers know how many miles we need to go down the road to find your house.  I cannot tell you how many times we have seen a garage sale advertised in the paper, went through the trouble to find it on a map, travel to it and find ourselves driving down a rural road for MILES and never found the sale. If they had said on the sign at the end of the road that the sale was 6 miles down - then we probably would have traveled 6 miles instead of giving up after 5. Some of you would be very surprised at how many customers you lose because of improper signage and directions. Many times Rich and I will be driving around looking for a sale and we see 3 or 4 other people looking for the same sale at the same- and we all eventually give up. I often wonder how many customers people lose because they didn't take the time to make proper signs.

Also - PLEASE! PLEASE!
Take your signs down when your sale is over - immediately!
The money spent on gas driving around looking for non-existent yard sales
gives people less money to spend at your next sale!
