- Ruth Handler (co-founder of Mattel Toys) created the Barbie Doll in 1959.
It was named after her daughter Barbara who was nicknamed
"Barbie." Barbie's real name is Barbie Millicent Roberts and she is from the state of Wisconsin.
- Mattel introduced the Ken doll in 1961 - Ken is
Ruth Handler's son's name. Handler became Mattel's president in 1967.
- Barbie's best friend, Midge, appeared in 1963.
- Ruth Handler's
husband, Elliott, developed Hot Wheels in 1968.
